Tehillim Vol.1

Tehillim, Hebrew for "Praises," is a project born out of love and worship for the Most High…

"A Thousand Fall," from Psalm 91, is rendered in the original Hebrew text: Yippōl miṣṣiddəḵā elep̄ (יִפֹּל מִצִּדְּךָ אֶלֶף).

Yippōl (יִפֹּל) does not simply mean "to fall"; it signifies a sudden collapse, a total failure of strength. Miṣṣiddəḵā (מִצִּדְּךָ) means "at your side," but its root refers to the side of the body—describing a danger so close it brushes against you. Finally, Elep̄ (אֶלֶף) is one thousand, representing totality.

In the Greek Septuagint, we find peseitai (πεσεῖται): "they shall fall." Yet this falling is not merely physical. A thousand people, a thousand certainties may fall beside us. But the Psalms speak of a Maḥaseh—a real refuge. God is a Meṣūḏā (Fortress) and a Ṣinnā (Shield).

God invites us into the Sēṯer, the "secret place"—a visceral, intimate protection. Even when everything falls, we are guarded. While a thousand give way, those in the secret place remain standing.

May the praises of the Psalms be for you, as they are for me, the path to rediscovering that secret place.
